Acne Care
As dermatologists, we employ various effective medical treatments to address acne, a common skin condition. Our goal is to tackle the underlying causes of acne, such as excessive sebum production, clogged pores, and inflammation, in order to achieve clearer and healthier skin for our patients.
One of the primary treatments we recommend is the use of topical medications. These topical treatments, available as creams, gels, or lotions, are directly applied to the skin. They contain potent ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinoids. These substances work wonders by unclogging pores, reducing inflammation, and preventing bacterial growth. We typically suggest applying these topical treatments once or twice daily, tailored to the severity of the acne. This approach is particularly effective for mild to moderate cases.
In instances of more severe acne, we may prescribe oral medications. Oral antibiotics, such as tetracycline or erythromycin, play a crucial role in reducing the presence of bacteria on the skin and alleviating inflammation. For women experiencing hormonal acne, we often recommend oral contraceptives, as they regulate hormone levels and help mitigate breakouts. In cases of severe and resistant acne, we might turn to isotretinoin (commonly known as Accutane). This oral medication is highly effective as it significantly reduces sebum production, unclogs pores, and prevents the formation of new acne lesions. It is important to note that isotretinoin necessitates close monitoring due to potential side effects, and we reserve its use for severe cases under our careful supervision. As dermatologists, we carefully evaluate the severity, acne type, and individual factors to tailor the most appropriate medication for each of our patients’ unique needs.
